Seoul Science High School
Seoul Science High School (SSHS) was founded in 1989 to provide a specialized curriculum for gifted students in mathematics and science. Since then, our school has taken a leading role in the field of science education in Korea. In 2009 our school was officially designated as a school for the gifted. With this designation, our school has complete autonomy to design an advanced curriculum to meet the special needs of gifted students. The level of academic achievement of our students is of the highest level in Korea as they have been through an extremely rigorous 3-step nationwide selection process. With these gifted students, excellent teachers, well-equipped facilities, and highly advanced curriculum, SSHS is preparing for a giant leap into the future.
The distinct features of our school can be summarized as follows.
1
The curriculum operates on a credit-based system. Unlike general high schools in Korea, where students progress by grade, our students progress by establishing individual curriculum based on ability and interest. Students can graduate if they complete 175 credits of the coursework and other graduation requirements.
2
The curriculum is research-oriented. Various research programs are designed to promote students' inquiry, creativity, and collaborative skills. In particular, the R&E program, where students learn by participating in a research project under the guidance of professors and scientists in research institutions and universities, provides our students with unique opportunities to acquire skills and attitudes required of future scientists.
3
The curriculum is geared toward continual enrichment via a view of deepening students' knowledge base. Many creative interdisciplinary courses are being designed to support students' inquiry and creativity.
4
Various programs are developed to build student character in order to train them to be future leaders who will contribute positively to our society. Humanities education is emphasized and a carefully designed reading program exists to develop critical thinking.
5
We believe our school has many more reasons to be considered one of the world's leading high schools in the field of special science education for the gifted. The academic achievement of our students is of the highest level. We select talented students with great potential from applicants nationwide through a rigorous three-step selection process. Our teachers are the best in Korea, recruited through a dedicated nationwide selection process. The teachers in our school are required to participate in in-service training annually to continue developing their professional knowledge and skills in special education for the gifted.
